Paint By Flash - hot off the press

Just last night 20+ students, graduates, and tutors gathered at Marie-Jean’s house to celebrate and once again conduct themselves through the rigours of paint by flash Paekakariki. Pumpkin soup, Tomato soup, sushi by Tom, Lasagne by Mel, garlic bread, sprinkles, and the bi-annual carrot cake were consumed. We all sang happy birthday to honour Mel, (who is now officially a pensioner - but don’t tell anyone, he’s still acting like a 30 year old lad), Alison and Kelvin who have all had birthdays recently.

Then it went dark. Nino, who was the guest toddler for the evening thought it was FANTASTIC that suddenly everyone was running around with flashes and torches and sparklers and the like, and that we’d turned all of the lights off… for AGES. No injuries were incurred. The results of their efforts can be seen below, and in addition, a record of the attendees - minus one or two who had to slip away earlier.

Murray sent me this wee collection of beauties recently (I’m slow to blog them, but that is in no way related to the work itself, only to my busy busy-ness). He’s extracted some really wonderful qualities from his students, and I think you’ll agree that these images show how well they have understood the importance of that honest, unvarnished environment for thoughtful portraiture. I just loved looking at these.

Finally, (for now) some delicious new studio work by the Advanced class

This is the first offering from the current Advanced photography group = I’ve just chosen a handful of the creative images from the first studio assignment. These students have just learned how to use tungsten lighting in the studio, and are now completing their second studio work - lighting translucent, opaque and reflective objects. I like what I see here. It will be exciting to see how you all develop.

A new generation of Black on Black, White on White beauties

I had the enormous privilege of a day teaching for Mel recently, introducing the Black on Black, White on White assignment to the current practical class. They are a super fun, endearing and high energy group, and although I wondered at first if I had totally overwhelmed them with information and stuff, they seemed to step up to the plate with enthusiasm and creativity when it came to completing the assignment. I’m really excited to see these shots. Mel apparently said they were the most interesting collection he’d seen for a good long while, from this assignment (the first assignment students complete with us). Wonderful stuff. Thankyou class for your rewarding efforts.
